Aubrey Plaza Revealed The Criticism She’s Tired Of Hearing
Aubrey Plaza, star of Parks and Rec and The White Lotus season 2, absolutely hates when people accuse her of playing the same character.
Aubrey Plaza has had a colorful career spanning comedy to horror to drama. However, Plaza spoke about one criticism she’s tired of hearing about her acting: the actress stated that she hates hearing people say she plays the same character in every project.
Plaza’s career began in 2006 when she appeared in Killswitch and In Love,two smaller, short films. In that same year, she also appeared in Tina Fey’s sitcom 30 Rock. Her profile rose higher after she starred in Parks & Recreation,which gained her increased recognition for her comedic chops. More recently, Plaza has been cast in Agatha: Coven of Chaos as a villainous character, and she currently stared as Harper Spiller on The White Lotus.

While appearing on In The Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast, Plaza took some time to reflect on her career. In doing so, she spoke out about people saying that she has no range. “I’m surprised every f****** time. I can’t tell you how many times I’m so sick of hearing all my characters are the same. I don’t know what it is. It’s like there’s something about me,” Plaza said. “[…] But, I’m super I’m always surprised that when I do something new, that there’s always that one person that goes: ‘oh, there she goes doing the Aubrey Plaza thing again.’ And I want to go like, ‘f*** you dude.’”
Plaza joked that she would soon have to start doing some “Meryl Streep s***” to disguise her appearance because she can’t change her voice. “I only have my own instrument to work with. Anyway, I sound bitter, but I’m not. But I am always surprised that people use ‘deadpan’ to describe some things that I’ve done. It just feels a little reductive. But that’s my journey.” It seems as though this is a trigger for Plaza, and she feels as though her work goes unrecognized simply due to the cadence of her voice.
Plaza has proven herself to be a versatile actress, however. Her performance on Legion opposite Godzilla vs Kong sequel star Dan Stevens should be all the proof there needs to be. In that role, she plays Lenny, David Haller’s best friend from the mental hospital. As her role unfolds, it turns out Lenny is a puppet for the Shadow King, and Plaza knocks the role out of the park. She is simultaneously funny, tragic, and even terrifying in the role.
Her appearance in The White Lotus season 2further showcases her acting abilities. In that role, she plays Harper, who’s in a marriage with some underlying tension that’s finally bubbling to the surface. Plaza plays the role perfectly, illustrating the flaws of her character while also attracting sympathy from the audience. Her devotion to the craft definitely should not be questioned, and her characters always have the potential to be iconic.
