When it comes to the Far Cry franchise, players have been everywhere, from a land before its time to now a post-apocalyptic American nightmare. Far CryNew Dawn is set 17 years after one of the endings for Far Cry5, and follows the same location, Hope County, which is forever altered with new characters, environments, and threats.
This certainly isn’t Far Cry5, nor is it a Far Cry like any other. This stand-alone sequel will introduce players to new characters. Some of the characters in Far CryNew Dawn can be used as Guns for Hire, making them great allies for the battlefield. However, only some can be the best companions in Far CryNew Dawn.
Once again, Hurk Drubman returns for Far CryNew Dawn. It seems that not even the nuclear apocalypse can keep this man down. Hurk’s decision to join the player as a Gun for Hire comes from when he had his distillery, girlfriend, and the car was taken by the Highwaymen.
Hurk is a funny character, and it is always nice to see a familiar face. Sadly, Hurk does not offer much other than his Rusty RPG-7. There are far better companions in Far CryNew Dawn than Hurk, especially ones that don’t risk their lives and the player’s life over an RPG.
A returning character from Far Cry5, Jerome has survived the nuclear war and suffers a deep crisis of religious faith in the remains of Hope County. After pledging his life to keep the innocent safe, it’s no surprise that Jerome would become a Gun for Hire to fight the Highwaymen.

Armed with the Rusty M133 shotgun, Jerome is a true berserker, who will throw Molotov cocktails and use incendiary shells for his shotgun. Jerome can deal a decent amount of damage quickly, but the problem comes from the fact that Jerome is exposed to enemy fire to do so, and can also set himself and the player on fire due to his arson abilities.
6 Carmina Rye
Carmina was born at a devastating time — born on the day that the world ended. Armed with the adventurous and brave spirit of her mother and father, Carmina will not let the dangerous wild frontier of the wasteland of Hope County stop her from her ambition. She is a Gun For Hire and wields an AR-C assault rifle.
Her arsenal includes dynamite, which can be fairly effective against enemies that group up, and aren’t expecting to be separated limb from limb with an explosion. She’s fairly decent in most situations but doesn’t have the best health or stealth abilities.
Dogs are still man’s best friend, even in the post-apocalypse. Timber is a stray dog that was rescued by the player, and becomes a loyal ally ever since. Timber can become a Fang for Hire, and utilize those sharp teeth of his, as well as his loyal ears and nose, to spot dangers ahead.
Timber can steal enemy vehicles and ride passengers if the player gets in cars. He’s a loyal canine companion, and thanks to the years of radiation, he has a great level of strength and intelligence that can be utilized by the player, without getting in the way.
Amnesia and narcolepsy can’t keep this old woman down. Nana demands respect for the elders of Hope County, especially when she is such a good shot with such a sharp wit. Nana utilized her shooting abilities in a homemade shooting range, and now puts it to the test against real people by being a Gun For Hire for the player.
Using a Rusty SVD, Nana is a great sniper, and her abilities allow her to see through smoke screens and shoot through cover. A single headshot from Nana is deadly, and enemies fail to locate this sniper. However, her effectiveness wavers when enemies begin to wear bulletproof helmets.
3 Gina Guerra
As a character who is looking to free herself from the crimes of the Highwaymen, Gina Guerra finds herself in new life. She is Hurk’s girlfriend and is rescued by the player after refusing to hand over her and Hurk’s baby. Gina will join the player as a Gun for Hire and becomes a heavy gunner character.

As a heavy gunner, Gina will use the Rusty M60 as her weapon of choice. What makes her so great is the fact that this giant gun will hold infinite ammo, allowing her to shoot uninterrupted. Further upgrading her will give her explosive ammunition. She’s a great ally for those that do not want to even bother trying stealth.
Another Fang for Hire comes in the form of a mutated boar named Horatio. This prized boar loves to fight, just as much as he likes a good scratching behind the ear. Horatio becomes a Fang for Hire after his family is murdered, but not before Horatio could kill six Highwaymen in retaliation and revenge, showing just how powerful this boar can be.
Horatio may be a boar, but that does not stop him from being a tank. He can destroy shields, revive himself, and commit himself to a charge attack that performs devastating damage to anyone caught in his way. With high health and lethal melee damage, Horatio is a great ally in Far CryNew Dawn.
1 The Judge
The Judge is arguably the best companion depending on players and their affiliation with Far Cry5. This character was the protagonist in Far Cry5 and harbors some emotional secrets that may be boiling to the surface if the player looks carefully. To see a character so fallen and broken to the point that they are ashamed of their face is heartbreaking.
The Judge focuses on stealth and is brilliant with archery. The Judge can also alter hostile wildlife and make it neutral. Upgrading The Judge will allow him to shoot three arrows at once, which can kill enemies almost instantly. The Judge also benefits from being a smart ally and can revive the player effectively if downed.
Far Cry New Dawn is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
